Why hire a car in Norway?

The roads themselves can be an absolute treat, with plunging coastlines and majestic rivers carving out superb vistas, not to mention the awe-inspiring natural phenomenon of the aurora borealis. Through long winter nights the northern lights can be seen from October to March, and taking your rental car away from the light pollution of a town could be a spectacular way to enhance the experience.

Another sight not to miss is the majestic Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock, an iconic Norwegian gem that despite only being around 160 miles from Bergen will take in the region of six hours to reach. The reason for this is the winding coastal roads and ferry crossings that must be negotiated, but the journey throws up sensational views of cliffs, fjords and the coastline.

Head to the stunning northerly Tromso which is quite a drive from Oslo; but a journey between the two provides an epic road trip. Some 1,100 miles separate the cities, which would take in the region of 22 hours to cover mostly on Swedish roads. Trondheim would see a shorter distance of just over 700 miles and almost 17 hours of often breath taking coastal roads.

Once in Tromso you’ll probably be ready to ditch the car, which is ideal as you can fly to Svalbard, a Norwegian Arctic archipelago that is around halfway to the North Pole from the mainland. Glaciers, ice fields, polar bears and mind-blowing scenery await those feeling adventurous and thick-skinned.
