Life’s a beach
Antigua thrives on the following cliché: ‘A beach for every day of the year’. Though this has yet to be put to the test, it’s certainly true that life here revolves around the beach. Of course, in a land where elegant palm trees bend down to kiss aquamarine waters and white sand, how could it be about anything else? Super-yachts line the harbours, and exclusive resorts line the picturesque coastline. Families, newlyweds, and marine-life enthusiasts all splash around in the calm, clear waters as they relax in the sun and the sand.
Rich in maritime history
Home to the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, the renovated English Harbour is the only working Georgian dockyard in the world. If you need a break from the beach, stop by Nelson’s Dockyard National Park and the Dockyard Museum, Nelson's telescope and Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre, where you can learn more about the history of the island. Once, the island was only accessible by sea and an arduous journey; now, it’s a breeze to visit, especially when you use Netflights to find flights to Antigua that fit your schedule and budget.
A little taste of paradise
Regardless of how you spend your days, start your nights off right with a delicious meal of Creole fish, lobster, or jerk chicken. Don’t forget to wash it down with a signature Caribbean rum cocktail. After a day of lounging on the beach in a hammock or trekking through dense jungle vegetation, trying Antigua’s local cuisine will be just what the doctor ordered.
When to go
The ideal time to go to Antigua falls between mid-December and mid-April, as the weather is grim in Britain and flawless in the Caribbean. Peak season, of course, hits the island around Christmas and New Year’s, so if you want to visit during these times, be sure to book your return flight well in advance.
Prices tend to be significantly lower during the rest of the year. The weather in early December and May tends to be very similar to peak season and comes without the high prices and plethora of tourists. As a result, this can be a great time to look for a bargain Caribbean holiday. In June, the temperatures start to rise. By July and August, Antigua is at its hottest– expect highs of 30 degrees Celsius – and most humid.
In terms of weather, September and October are the least desirable months for a holiday. Hurricane season starts in July, peaks in September and runs until November. Humidity and rainfall are common. Unsurprisingly, prices drop, and crowds dwindle between May to November.
