Brisbane - Lifestyle & Culture

Culture

Brisbane’s South Bank was already a bustling focus for culture, and the addition of The Queensland Gallery of Modern Art in 2006 just cemented this area as the place to be for art lovers, with famous pieces on exhibit and large shows such as the Andy Warhol exhibition.

Also on the South Bank, The Queensland Art Gallery houses a collection of more than 10,000 works while the Queensland Maritime Museum exhibits antique maps plus shipping and boating artefacts.

A variety of cultural festivals held annually, including Ekka, Riverfestival and the Brisbane International Film Festival, also regularly showcase the city’s artistic leanings.

Brisbane also has a number of choirs, including the Brisbane Chorale and the Queensland Choir that can often be found performing in the city's churches.

Nightlife

Fortitude Valley has long been a meeting place for bohemian Brisbanities and today this area, known as the Valley, has grown into a vibrant hub of hip clubs and cool bars. Head for James Street, Brunswick Street or Ann Streets where a variety of venues offer cutting edge clubs, live music, cafes, bars and eateries.

As this area grows in popularity, the more edgy crowd are pushed towards other districts – chase the cool crowd to areas like the West End and Paddington, where you’ll find a studenty, laid back and eclectic vibe.

For smart bars and sophisticated cocktails head to the CBD, where the after-work crowd mingle in the latest new watering holes.

Brisbane is well noted for its live music scene. Visit venues such as The Zoo, The Globe and The Tivoli, found in Fortitude Valley, and find out what the buzz is about.

At The Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts on Brunswick Street in Fortitude Valley you can find exhibitions and festivals of visual art, music and dance.

Theatre lovers should head back to The South Bank, home to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, where you’ll find the city’s main theatres - the Lyric Theatre, a Concert Hall, Cremorne Theatre and the Playhouse Theatre.
