Melbourne - Getting Around

Melbourne operates an impressive array of public transport options, offering fast, frequent and efficient options for exploring the city.

Bus

The free Melbourne City Tourist Shuttle bus service takes in all of the city’s principle attractions and runs every 15 minutes from Federation Square, again, complete with audio guide.

Tram

For a good overview of the city, hop on board the City Circle Tram: a free service, running around the edge of the city’s core and on to the Docklands development. It’s a trundling, clanking old beast, but good fun and complete with audio guide.

Metlink

The Metlink system incorporates trams, trains and buses operating routes in and around all points of the city. It’s best to get a Metcard and then you can travel on all three. A daily ticket costs around $4, and offers unlimited travel within specific zones (zone 1 is the CBD district), while a 5 day plus card is cheaper for those staying in the city for a week or so. Tickets are available from train stations, tram stops and 7-Eleven stores and newsagents around the city.

For all travel-related information and help, visit the Met Shop, in Melbourne Town Hall, Swanston Street, and pick up timetables and brochures.

Taxis

Yellow Melbourne taxis offer pick ups from $3.20 and around $1.50 each kilometre thereafter. You can hail them in the street, or head to a rank - such as those at Flinders Street, Fed Sqaure or Victoria Street. After midnight, fares have a 20% surcharge.
