Abu Dhabi events guide - what's on when?
Throughout the year this exotic and stunning location plays host to various events. With people travelling the world over to attend and take part, here are a selection of things happening during Abu Dhabi’s fun filled entertainment calendar.
January - Abu Dhabi Golf Championship
With 120 players competing at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, there’s a $2.7 million prize fun and the Falcon Trophy up for grabs, in one of the early season’s trio of events during the European Tour.
February – Gourmet Abu Dhabi
Taking place over 15 days at the beginning of the month, this foodie extravaganza features a host of Michelin trained chefs and special guests, alongside industry insights form hospitality experts, master classes, and gourmet dinners hosted by some of the top restaurants around the UAE.
March – Abu Dhabi Festival
Taking place throughout the month, this amazing festival features innovative artistic talent from around the world. From orchestras and classical music performances from world leading composers, to ballet and concerts from award winning artists; this is a cultural event like no other.
April - Abu Dhabi International Book Fair
With a commitment to the expansion of the global book business, the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair is the most ambitious and fastest growing book fair across the Middle East and North Africa. With author lectures, book signings, poetry performances and a cooking show, alongside a plethora of books to buy, this is a great experience for any literature enthusiast.
May - Beauty Secrets Show
Check out the Beauty Secrets Show and give yourself a glamorous look to flaunt in these lavish streets. A huge event with regional and international participants promoting, selling and displaying their beauty products and services - alongside skin, hair, body care, fitness and nutrition products and accessories - you’ll be able to pamper yourself all day long.
June - Abu Dhabi Summer Festival
Starting in June and lasting all the way into August, this summer festival incorporates fun performances and activities for the whole family. With a whole host of fun filled performances, music, food and a variety of cultural activities it’s one of the biggest events in the summer calendar. You can experience theatre performances, an interactive Cartoon Network Village, poetry, handicrafts and workshops on various art forms throughout the festival’s run.
July - Liwa Festival
A lively Muslim cultural celebration, which opens up an incredible opportunity to experience the Emirati culture close up. This annual celebration promotes and celebrates the symbolic and historic role date palms play within the culture, and hosts a number of events as locals compete for the ‘best date grower’ title.
August - Al Wathba Racetrack
The Al Wathba Racetrack re-opens for the season, where the unique cultural heritage of the UAE’s Camel Racing takes place. The camel racing is free to watch to spectators and is an excellent way to experience something so unique to this part of the world. A closing festival is held the following April, when the camel racing season ends.
September - Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr Festival
Following the end of Ramadan, a period of fasting and spiritual reflection in Muslim culture, the Eila al-Fitr Festival takes place. Celebrations begin at the sighting of the new moon following the period, and tourists and locals can experience a host of stalls selling food and goods at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.
October - Shangri-La Abu Dhabi Dragon Boat Festival
Centred on Abu Dhabi’s stunning Grand Canal, teams from schools and businesses alongside sports people assemble at the Shangri-La Hotel. Here they battle it out in the glorious dragon boat race, as locals and tourists cheer them on from the luxurious beachfront hotel.
November - Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
As the latest edition to the competition, the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix epitomises the glitz and glamour of this region. Visitors and residents alike flock to this amazing and spectacular event, so get your seats early and experience the drama and excitement of F1.
December – Creamfields Abu Dhabi
With the festival season typically over in September, you can head to Abu Dhabi and keep the excitement going. In the middle of December Abu Dhabi plays host to the number one dance festival, Creamfields. With previous acts including The Prodigy and Calvin Harris, this non-stop electro party is fun for all involved.
