A brief history
Atlanta’s history is one of resilience and incredible growth. Atlanta was a focal point for the battles of the American Civil War, due to its proximity to rail lines used for transporting military supplies. When the tides turned and Confederate General John Bell Hood retreated in 1864, the Union’s General Sherman ordered that the city of Atlanta be evacuated of its citizens and then burnt to the ground. All that was left were the churches and hospitals. It wasn’t long before Atlanta began its phenomenal rise from the ashes, thanks in part to the nearby rail lines. In 1868, Atlanta was declared the state capital, and soon it was Georgia’s largest city. In the early decades of the 20th century, it experienced a huge boom, with its population tripling. With the boom came racial tensions, but Atlanta pressed through another challenging period to become a beacon of human rights and the home of one of its greatest heroes, Martin Luther King Jr.
Today Atlanta enjoys the status of an “alpha” or “world” city. It ranks sixth highest in the USA, and 15th highest in the world, for its GDP.
