Tampa - Getting Around

Tampa, should you wish to spend time within its downtown area, is served by a fleet of reliable, and eco-friendly streetcars and (slightly less eco-friendly street trolleys - actually just diesel-guzzling buses, painted to look like old fashioned street cars!). Good fun, and a pleasant way to get your bearings, the services stop at or near most of the city's clutch of diverting attractions.

Streetcar

The handsome and historic TECO Streetcar runs from Dick Greco Plaza downtown to Ybor City, Tampa's thriving Cuban-tinged nightlife hub. Use this if you're headed to the Pete Times Forum, Channelside, the Florida Aquarium, and the bars and restaurants of Ybor. Fares cost around $2.50. A 1-day, unlimited rides pass for both streetcars and trollies is a much better value $5, Streetcars arrive every 15 minutes (or every half hour late at night) until 2am. Ticket vending machines are located at all stops.

Trolley

Tampa's two-line trolley service serves the CBD (Central Business District). The Purple Line runs north south (to the north end of Harbor island), and the Green, weekend only, line plies the route along the Hillsborough River (west side of CBD), with rides costing around $1 a trip, or a day pass for $5.

Taxis

If you're after a taxi in Tampa you're best heading to the ranks, outside hotels, the Performing Arts Centre, bus and train stations, as the custom of hailing in the streets isn't something that's widely accepted here. Fares are $2 flagfall, and $2.25 for each mile thereafter. Along the Gulf Coast, taxis ply Gulf Boulevard and can be found alongside all major shopping malls, entertainment villages and piers.
