booking advice, visa information and airports and airlines tips

When is the best time to book cheap flights to Rome?

If you want cheap flights to Rome, it’s best to book three to four months in advance. But if you’re planning to visit in the popular summer months, you should book at least six months beforehand to get a good deal.

When is the cheapest time to visit Rome?

Flights to Rome are cheapest during January, but you’ll also find good offers in November and early December. Accommodation is also cheaper at this time of year. Flight prices peak in August, but any summer month is an expensive time to visit Rome – so book as early as you can to get a cheaper flight. You’ll also find that flight prices go up around significant dates, like Valentine’s Day, Easter and Christmas.

When is Rome weather best?

Rome has similar seasons to the UK, but the temperatures are slightly more extreme. July and August are the hottest months, with temperatures regularly reaching 31°C and rarely falling below 20°C. If you’d prefer to have slightly cooler temperatures, try going to Rome in May, June, September or October when the mid-twenties sunshine is perfect for sightseeing. November is the wettest month, while January is the coldest – but flights to Rome are much cheaper in winter, so it could be worth the trade off.

Which airlines fly to Rome?

A range of airlines offer flights from the UK to Rome, including easyJet, Ryanair, British Airways, Jet2, Alitalia and Vueling.

How long is the flight to Rome?

Depending on which UK airport you fly from, a direct flight from the UK to Rome takes between two-and-a-half hours and three hours.

How many airports does Rome have?

Rome is served by two airports. Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (FCO) is the city’s main airport and most flights from the UK will land here. Ciampino Airport (CIA) is Rome’s other, much smaller airport – if you fly with Ryanair, you’ll land here.

How do I get from Fiumicino Airport (FCO) into Rome?

Fiumicino Airport lies 30 kilometres southwest of Rome, but getting into the city is very easy. The simplest option is to catch the Leonardo Express – this direct train runs to Rome’s main station every half an hour, between 6:30am and 11:30pm. A one-way ticket costs around €11, and you must buy one before you get on the train.

Alternatively, you could take a taxi straight to your door. Just make sure you get in an official taxi, so that you’re not over-charged – official taxis are white with a ‘taxi’ light on the roof, and each one will have a license number. Official airport taxi fares are capped at €48. It might be less, depending on where you’re staying, but it certainly won’t be more.

How do I get from Ciampino Airport (CIA) into Rome?

Ciampino Airport is 16 kilometres southeast of Rome, and you can reach the city centre via bus, train or taxi. Costing just €2.50 each way, the train is the cheapest option – but the journey takes an hour in total, as you’ll need to take a bus to Ciampino Station first, before boarding the train to Rome.

Another option is to take the bus into the city. SITBus and Terravision buses both cost €4 for a one-way ticket, and kids under the age of four travel for free on Terravision. You’ll find Terravision at the bus station, just left out of the Arrivals exit. SITBus, meanwhile, are just outside Terminal 3. Whichever one you choose, you can expect the journey to Rome to take around 45 minutes.

For a quicker journey – about 30 minutes – you could take an official taxi. If you’re travelling to anywhere within the Aurelian Walls, it’ll be a flat fare of €44.

What are the top things to do in Rome?

Italy’s historic capital and largest city boasts some of the best sightseeing in Europe – so there’s plenty to do. You can expect to find ancient churches, iconic ruins and ornate fountains around every corner. But Rome isn’t just about art and history – although that is what it’s most famous for. The city also has an incredible restaurant scene, serving regional dishes like carbonara, pizza Romana and cacio e pepe. Rome is also considered a shopping haven, thanks to its slick Italian boutiques.
