City Breaks 2014
If you want a break from the ordinary, nipping off to another city for a weekend or even a week is becoming more and more popular. With so many convenient (and good value) flights from so many local airports, you can get to most major cities in a couple of hours.
Perhaps you want to take someone special for a romantic getaway, or maybe you want to take the family for a short stay away at half-term, there are plenty of cheap city breaks out there.
If you can be flexible, you can keep the costs down by flying on the less popular days of the week such as a Tuesday, not a Friday. Some hotels which rely on lots of business travellers through the week will be more reasonable on the weekend. Many offer special multi-night break packages too.
For romantic city breaks, the ‘city of light’ always delivers. Moonlit walks along the Seine, leisurely meals in a pavement bistro, admiring the world’s largest art collection in the Louvre, Paris is for lovers, and lovers of the good life. Go in summer, and you can cool off on one of the ‘beaches’ created along the Seine.
Art lovers will love Amsterdam too, for its Old Masters in wonderful museums and galleries, 200 works by Van Gogh, and wonderful architectural heritage. Away from the culture, take a bike ride along a canal, and work up a real sweat amongst the lively clubbing scene.
For an excellent value city break, head further east to Prague. Its history and glorious old world charm is a great setting for any visit, especially at Christmas when the special seasonal markets are in full swing. Pack your posh frock for a visit to the State Opera, or your shorts for a stroll along the river in the summer sunshine.

Another city that draws city-breakers at all times of the year, though high summer can be too hot for some, is Barcelona. It has something for everyone, even a beach at the foot of the Ramblas. The proud Catalan heritage of its inhabitants is everywhere: the startling Gaudi architecture, amazing food markets, cutting-edge cuisine, and the world’s most famous football team. Then there’s trendy shopping, full-on nightlife and a huge choice of accommodation, including some very cheap, yet stylish, options.
Rome is a classic city break destination, with any number of free and nearly free attractions. The Vatican, the Coliseum, Trevi Fountains, Pantheon, Sistine Chapel, Spanish Steps… the list goes on and on. However, be warned, avoid the touristy spots if you want to eat and drink more cheaply. And staying slightly off the beaten track can also save you money on a cheap Rome city break.
Fly to New York for a cheap city break and be prepared to live the way the locals do: 24 hours a day! Broadway shows, the best shopping on the planet, global food options, jazz clubs, night clubs, walks in Central Park, great modern art, New York will get you your money’s worth indeed.
Somewhat more sedate and traditional, Boston is lovely in autumn as the New England leaves take on a golden-red hue. Take the self-guided 2.5 mile Freedom Trail that takes in 16 important historic sites. Late Spring is also a good time to come to Boston, with fewer crowds, nice weather and cheaper prices.
