Washington Travel Guide

The lie of the land

Washington D.C. is a city of bold and contrasting neighbourhoods. Adams-Morgan is where you’ll find a host of ethnic eateries, boutiques, hip speciality stores and late-night entertainment. Capitol Hill is a neighbourhood of fine Victorian row houses and boutiques. In Dupont Circle, the Beaux-Arts mansions and embassies, upmarket restaurants and galleries create an air of genteel grandeur. Foggy Bottom is a riverfront neighbourhood of 19th century houses, while Georgetown, once a thriving colonial port, is now a charming historic area full of speciality stores and intriguing restaurants.

Getting Around

The US capital is easy to navigate thanks to an efficient public transport system serviced by Metrorail (subway) and Metrobus. A trolley ticket is perhaps the easiest way to ensure you see all the major sights during your visit. Because most of its landmarks are within easy walking distance of the mile-long National Mall, you can even tour on foot.

Dining, Entertainment and Nightlife

Washington D.C. is a truly international city, reflected by the vast range of cuisines. Ethnic food and late-night entertainment go hand in hand in Adams-Morgan.

From the upmarket Georgetown boutiques and bohemian shops of Adams-Morgan, to the world-famous outlet malls of Downtown, Washington DC is a shoppers’ paradise. The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, reached by blue line Metro, offers over 100 shops. Or you might like to try the great selection of stores at the spectacular Victorian Georgetown Park.

Don't leave without...

• Having a look at The White House and world-famous Washington landmark.
• Broadening your horizons at the Smithsonian Institution Museums.
• Visiting the National Mall.
• Going along to Arlington Cemetery, final resting place of numerous national heroes, including John F. Kennedy.
