City Summer Holidays - New York
New York City comes alive in the summer making it a perfect summer holiday destination.
Once the winter thaws into spring and summer the city pulsates with life. Street markets pop up all over the place, usually lasting a single day, selling everything from clothes to fruit and smoothies – perfect for when you’re feeling the heat.
Between 110th and 59th streets – taking up a staggering 843 acres – lies Central Park, one of the most celebrated parts of New York’s summer. From relaxing on the huge expanse of the Great Lawn soaking up the sun to rowing across the lake or even playing any number of the sports on offer, there is space for everyone.
During the summer months there is a wide range of entertainment; from the annual Shakespeare festival and performances at the public theatre (often starring well known faces of stage and screen) to the annual concerts put on by the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Orchestra. During the day, if the heat gets too much for you, you can always head to one of the nearby museums, such as the Met or the American Museum of Natural History.

More About New York
Further downtown you can hit the bright lights of Broadway or spend the day indulging in some retail therapy, snapping up some of the summer bargains before grabbing a snack from one of New York’s famous street vendors or taking the weight off your feet at a street-side cafe.
Whilst down at the tip of the island you’ll find the free ferry to Staten Island – a great way to see that famous skyline and, of course, Lady Liberty standing poised on Liberty Island – the sight that welcomed so many immigrants to the US.
Times Square in Summer
During the summer months it is easy to see why they say that this is the city that never sleeps – whether you are into food, cocktails, clubs or theatres (or all of the above!) your every desire will be right on your doorstep.
A must-see for anyone taking the trip to NYC is, of course, Times Square. At night this heaving heart of the city will trick you into thinking it is still day time with its bright lights and big screens.
New York Weather
Temperatures in the city can shoot up in the summer – temperatures peak in August and can reach up to 31°C, and rarely dip below 20°C – so be prepared to drink lots of water and take some shelter from the sun in the air-conditioned shops or museums.
