How to hire a car abroad without the paper counter part driving license

A lot of fuss was made earlier on in the year about this and it was a storm in a teacup!

If you are hiring a car it’s really easy.

Did you have a 2 part driving licence photo it and paper counterpart then this applies to you and you need to apply for the share your driving licence information code.  This code is valid for 21 days.

Go onto https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

Make sure you have the below and it will take minutes.

You will then get a code you share with your car rental supplier.  I print off the code as well as writing it down on my car hire voucher but then I always like to double check everything!

Exceptions

If you have the old style paper only driving licence it doesn’t apply.

Hiring a car in the  USA/Canada with Alamo/National it doesn’t apply

Northern Ireland licence holders. The counterpart remains a requirement, as this is a devolved responsibility.
