Lady Liberty: World traveller

The world is filled with many natural and man-made marvels, and one of the most famous comes in the shape of the Statue of Liberty.

Dedicated to the city of New York in 1886 from France, the statue has become a symbol of the United States and one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York and the world.

However, Lady Liberty likes to explore and you can find her dotted across the world in many places – here’s a few.

United Kingdom

Believe it or not the statue of Liberty has sprung up a few times in the UK; but where you may ask. Although initial thoughts may direct themselves toward London, you’ll actually find a 17 foot, 9.2 ton replica in Leicester. Here she sits atop a pedestal near Liberty Park Halls, not far from her original home above the Liberty Shoe Factory.

You’ll also find a small replica at RAF Lakenheath, made from leftover copper from the original itself.

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to America, dedicated in 1886, but when visiting Paris, you’ll find a number of replicas throughout the city. One stands at the entrance of the Musee d’Orsay, another near Grenelle Bridge on the artificial Île aux Cygnes Island on the River Seine, and finally a bronze one made from the original plaster outside the Musee des Arts et Metiers. There’s also a life size copy of the Flame of Liberty (the torch), above the entrance to the Pont de L’Alma.

There are other replicas throughout France, notably in Barentin, Bordeaux, Colmar, and Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer, amongst others.

In the city of Shenzhen, is a rather wonderful theme park called the Window of the World. This tourist attraction features all the regions on earth. Within these you’ll find 130 reproductions of famous world attractions, including the Pyramids, Eiffel Tower and of course the Statue of Liberty.

In the northern Luzon Island of the Philippines is Baguio City, a huge centre of business and commerce filled with beautiful architecture. Here is Camp John Hay, a former US military station, and one of the area’s more popular tourist attractions – this may have something to do with the small replica of Lady Liberty found near the amphitheatre.

South America

Rio de Janeiro is famed for its Christ the Redeemer statue, but visiting other parts of Brazil will introduce you to a multitude of replicas of New York’s famous statue. Situated in Miami Square, Bangu, is a nickel replica created by Bartholdi, who made the original statue. The piece was originally made in 1899 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Republic of Brazil. There’s also a smaller scale model in Maceio, outside the Museum of Image and Sound of Alagoas – which is thought to have been created by Fundição Val d’Osne, and to be of similar age to the original.

A modern day replica sits outside the New York City Center, with multiple to be seen at various Havan Department stores – the tallest being 57 metres, in the state of Santa Catarina.

Over in Bueno Aires, the capital and largest city in Argentina, there is an abundance of things to do in this cultural hub; with numerous museums, art galleries and intriguing music all around. What you might not have expected to find is a small replica of the statue of Liberty in Barrancas De Belgrano Square, where it has stood since the 1910s; it was created by Bartholdi from the same mould as the original casts made in Paris.

Discover a great deal on a holiday in New York with and meet the real Lady Liberty.
