general at Traverse Travel Conference in Newcastle

By April 15, 2014 No Comments

A couple of months ago we sent 3 travel bloggers down to attend the Traverse travel conference in Newcastle at The Sage Gateshead. Many of you will know how much the travel blogging world has taken off, and the rapidly growing industry now plays an important role in the philosophy of travel brands and companies. The aim of Traverse is therefore to bring together an array of travel bloggers and industry delegates for a weekend of networking, workshops and talks from leading industry experts. It was a really great event so a big thank you to our travel bloggers – Lucy, Jen and Zoe – for taking the time to go down; here is a little about each their experience of Traverse and their time in Newcastle.

Blogging can be pretty solitary – I spend twice as long shut away with my laptop as I do actually travelling. But what started off as a hobby has turned into an industry, with blogger conferences like Traverse in February. From the impressive modern venue at the Sage Gateshead to the after-conference trips around the north-east, the Traverse team and the city of Newcastle-Gateshead put on a great show. The sessions went way beyond what you’d think of as blogging – covering topics like working with brands, shooting and editing travel videos, developing publishing projects and dealing legal issues. But as inspirational as the workshops were, they was only the half of it. The feeling of community from the other travel bloggers was just as motivational. You couldn’t walk across a room without hearing excited chatter about future travel plans or new blog ideas. And meeting the faces behind so many blogs I’ve been reading for years almost felt like catching up with old friends.

Traverse inspired and motivated me from start to finish. Surrounded by a mix of brand new bloggers and the big names, you could learn from every conversation, whilst also being able to ramble on about your number one obsession… travel. There were loads of great sessions you could learn from during the day, including how to work with brands, top tips for using social media and video editing. It’s brilliant to spend time with likeminded travel types who are all enjoying and struggling with the same blogging highs and lows. I took away so much from the weekend, but best of all was winning a holiday to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon in America. Amazing!

The weekend at Traverse was a really exciting event, one that was both inspiring and educational. There was plenty of opportunity to learn new skills and develop on existing ones. We had a great talk from Michael Turtle on ‘Thinking like a journalist to bring your posts to life’- his message was to keep returning to the main point of the article, keep the reader engaged and to remember that good writing appeals to ALL the senses. Elsewhere Greg Brand gave useful tips in his video-making session and there was also some excellent 1-1 Pro-Bar sessions – I met up with Jennifer Howze, award winning co-founder of Brit Mums, to talk about the challenges of helping travel businesses and bloggers co-work more efficiently. Overall, the event provided a great chance to make business contacts, to liaise with new clients and to talk about how bloggers can support businesses future marketing initiatives. And of course, it was also a great opportunity to network with old and new friends.
