Star Wars Episode 7: A Journey Through Tunisia

By June 26, 2014 One Comment

In a galaxy far far away, intergalactic war raged for decades as the Jedi and the Sith went head to head. There were wins and losses, but most importantly one of the most iconic film franchises was born.

But do you remember how we got from square one to six in the Jedi quest? Well rather than watching the films, why not follow in the footsteps of Anakin, Obi-Wan and Luke, through the Tunisian/Tatooine trail, on your own personal Jedi pilgrimage.403x403_StarWars-01

The Beginning

Tunisia: Ksar Hadada, Ghoumrassen

Tatooine: Mos Espa

Taking inspiration from The Phantom Me
nace you’ll begin your journey in Mos Espa, or Tozeur as it’s known in Tunisia. Standing in the middle of the desert, here you can experience what the young Anakin did as you venture to Watto’s shop, wander the market, the gallery and Sebulba’s Café; you can even venture to the pod-racing arena, where Anakin won his freedom.

Tunisia: Tataouine, south of Medenine

Tatooine: Mos Espa

At Medenine you’ll find the very home where the young protégé lived and built C-3PO, which takes the shape of a granary. Just down the road you’ll find the background for some of the slave quarters where Skywalker and his mother lived, in the shape of Ksar Ouled Soltane. Importantly, the area in which you’ll find this is Tataouine, the place that inspired the name for this famous planet.

Tunisia: The Yardangs, Onk Jemal, Tozeur

Tatooine: Mos Espa

It’s now time to leave the planet by heading to the Yardangs. Two protruding shark fin like pieces of sandstone. This is where Qui-Gon and the double lightsaber wielding Darth Maul battled it out whilst trying to reach the repaired star ship. All was ok, but it would be a decade before returning to the planet.

The Middle

Tunisia: Chott El Jerid, Tozeur

Tatooine: Lars Homestead

Luckily you don’t have to wait this long to continue your Jedi adventure. Sadly it’s not for a fun purpose, as this is when Shmi Skywalker’s funeral occurred. This will land you in Tozeur, where you’ll find the famous exterior of the Lars Homestead.

This is also where Luke Skywalker was handed to his uncle, at the end of Episode Three, starting a new Jedi experience.

The End?

Tunisia: Sidi Bouhlel

Tatooine: Tatooine Canyon

Around 20 years later things don’t get off to a great start, as R2-D2 and C-3PO, who are carrying a game changing message, are captured at the entrance to Sidi Bouhel. You’ll recognise this as the Sandcrawler parking lot, where the droids were bought by the Skywalkers.

Tunisia: Matmata

Tatooine: Lars Homestead

Heading to Matmata you’ll find the interior of the Lars Homestead. Whilst here walk in the footsteps of Skywalker, as you wander the rooms of the house and see where Princess Leia’s message was finally revealed. Luckily for you the interior can be found at the Hotel Sidi Driss, where  you can stay the night and feel a connection to the world’s most famous Jedi.

Tunisia: Chott El Jerid, Tozeur

Tatooine: Lars Homestead

Now it’s time to experience one of the best parts of the entire Tatooine/Tunisian landscape. Back at Tozeur you’ll once again find the exterior of the Lars Homestead, but make sure you visit during sunset, because even though there’s only one sun, the view and experience is still one of spectacle.

Tunisia: Sidi Bouhlel

Tatooine: Tatooine Canyon

The next day head back to Sidi Bouhel. In the narrow gorge of the Jundland Wastes, which is walled by two hundred foot high cliff faces, you’ll find yourself in the location Luke was attacked by Tusken Raiders, right before he met Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Tunisia: Djerba

Tatooine: Ben’s Hermitage

Following Luke’s rescue by the older Jedi, Djeba is home to the little house where Obi-Wan lived and offered Luke his father’s lightsaber.

Tunisia: Sidi Bouhlel

Tatooine: Tatooine Canyon

Following this, return to the mouth of the gorge at Sidi Bouhel, where the Stormtroopers massacred the Jawas whilst hunting for the droids. It was after this that Luke’s family met the same fate, sending him on a mission into the galaxy to bring down the Empire.

Here’s where your Star Wars adventure ends, as the subsequent films never returned to the planet of Tatooine. So where Luke ventured off to become a full-fledged Jedi, you can fly back to your own home planet (country), and feel as close to the force as humanly possible. Happy exploring.

The crux of your writing while sounding reasonable originally, did not really sit perfectly with me personally after some time. Someplace throughout the paragraphs you managed to make me a believer unfortunately only for a short while. I nevertheless have a problem with your leaps in assumptions and you might do well to fill in all those gaps. In the event you can accomplish that, I could undoubtedly end up being fascinated.
