Why Visit Montréal?

Montréal is the second-largest Francophone city after Paris, and the largest city in Canada’s Québec province. It is home to a spectacular historic quarter, Old Montréal, which is full of cobbled boulevards and ornate colonial buildings such as the Basilique Notre-Dame. Rue Saint Paul, once the centre of the city, lets you come across little shops, art galleries and cafés as you wander around.
Montréal is famous for its culinary culture, which you can explore by taking a gourmet walking tour of the city’s trendy Mile End District. Sample Montréal’s signature dish, poutine, or stop off at the Jean-Talon Market in Little Italy to pick up Quebecois artisanal cheeses, wines and sweets. At Mount Royal Park you can go snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or skating in winter, or bird watching in summer. Finally, for the best views over Montréal, head to the Olympic Park, built for the 1976 Olympic Games, where you can take the funicular to the top of the Montréal Tower.

Don't Forget Before you Fly

British citizens don’t need a visa to enter Canada for short visits, but do need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before flying. If you plan to say in Canada for a longer period, you should check the requirements with the Canadian High Commission. The local currency is the Canadian dollar, and it’s always a good idea to change some in advance to save time when you arrive. There are also cash machines and currency exchange services at Montréal Airport.
