Amsterdam travel guide

Just over an hour away from most major UK airports, and certainly less than two, a quick hop across the North Sea will see you land at Schiphol Airport. The easiest way to Amsterdam itself is to jump on a quick train, which will drop you at the central station of one of Europe’s most picturesque cities.

Venturing through the streets is a unique experience, whether you deploy your own two feet on terra firma, lazily use them on a relaxing pedalo ride along the waterways, or dare to join the masses of cyclists with a tandem bicycle ride. Just be sure to keep an eye and ear out for the trams that have a tendency to sneak up on you, while you’re avoiding the never-ending army of cyclists. The architecture of the city is really something to behold, and taking to the canals is an excellent way to enjoy the magnificent edifices that thrust up into the air all around. Sort out your itinerary in advance and be sure to check out some of the notorious museums, and galleries, on offer at the Museumplein, or Museum Square.

The Rijksmuseum is breath-taking from the outside and hardly disappoints once you make it past the threshold, while the Van Gogh Museum requires little introduction. The Stedelijk Museum pays excellent homage to modern and contemporary art and design, and is another not to be missed.

Sample a weighty cheese fondue, head for the Bloemenmarkt - Flower Market - for a dose of colour, or for a different variety of colour pay the Red Light District a visit; the options are as limitless as those bicycles.
