Boston destination guide

Immerse yourself in the culture and learn about some of the most pivotal parts in American history, from the Boston Tea Party to the American Revolution all the way to the Kennedy’s; as you walk along the Freedom Trail, stop at the Bunker Hill Monument and explore Beacon Hill.

After immersing yourself in the grandeur of the local history, check out the local food which provides excellent dining for seafood lovers; in fact the area is considered one of the best for this type of dining.

Sports fans and shopaholics can also holiday side by side as the NHL’s Bruins and the NBA’s Celtics are close by at the TD Garden; and Newbury Street provides a whole host of world class shopping in renovated brownstone buildings.

The lie of the land

Boston’s picturesque parks, churches, statues, colonial houses and fashionable residential neighbourhoods stand in stark contrast to the strikingly modern skyscrapers of its financial district. In this two-in-one city, small and compact enough to explore on foot, you’ll discover the hidden charms of the Charles River, the tree-lined streets and distinguished brownstone houses of Beacon Hill, Historic Back Bay and the shops, stores and boutiques of Copley Square, the Downtown area and Quincy Market.

Getting around

Boston is essentially a walking city, but to explore Cape Cod, New England and further afield, you’ll need a hire car (see pages 16 and 17). Public transport is affordable and reliable, with the ‘T’ trains
making it easy to get around and trolley tours giving you the opportunity to see the sights in true Bostonian style.

Don't leave without...

• Walking the Freedom Trail.
• Learning more about the legacy of the most famous 20th century president at the J.F. Kennedy Library and Museum.
• Hunting down a bargain in the Back Bay and Newbury Street shops.
• Checking out Faneuil Hall.
• Visiting the historic State House.

Dining, entertainment and nightlife

Boston offers a cosmopolitan array of restaurants and is, of course, renowned for its seafood. Back Bay in particular has something for every taste and budget. As a city of culture Boston offers a wide variety of entertainment depending on the season. For sports fans, it’s home to the Boston Red Sox and the Celtics while culture vultures are drawn by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and thriving theatre scene.

Prudential Center in Back Bay has a wealth of department stores, while nearby Newbury Street is great for designer boutiques, antiques and galleries. In the Downtown Crossing area, you’ll find over 300 retail shops including Filene’s department store with its famous Bargain Basement. Nearby Quincy Market offers a unique open air shopping experience, complete with street performers.
