Shopping City Break Itineraries 2019
If shopping really floats your boat, a shopping city break could be just the tonic you need (but maybe your credit card dreads).
Three cities that will really deliver the goods on the retail front are, in no particular order, New York, Paris and Dubai.
If you’re in a New York state of mind, fly into JFK airport and get a cab to whisk you to your room at the five-star Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan. This Art Deco masterpiece has defined the idea of luxury hotel living for decades. You don’t have to go far for a memorable evening meal: the Bull and Bear Steakhouse serves the tastiest Angus beef and seafood. Of course, you have to sample a Waldorf Salad in the hotel that invented it.
Next morning, head for the fabulous New York shopping. Midtown is for iconic department stores, downtown delivers all that’s funky and fun, and out of town is for serious discount outlet saving.
The perfect shopping break start is one or more of the major department stores. Like Macy’s, a million square feet over nine floors, or Saks on Fifth Avenue, with every shoe brand imaginable. Bergdorf Goodman is all luxury and the latest designer collections. And, then there’s Tiffany’s, New York’s iconic purveyor of exquisite jewellery. For really serious savings, places like Century 21 sell big clothing brands at low prices.
A Broadway show is a great way to end off a day full of shopping, and before you head for the airport the next day, take in brunch at Katz’s Deli, and walk it off in Central Park. Do leave yourself plenty of time to do a last burst of duty-free shopping at the airport.

A quick flight to Paris’s Charles de Gaulle or Orly airports and you’ll have plenty of time to settle into a nice boutique hotel like the Hotel Bonaparte in the highly-coveted St Germain-des-Pres district. For dinner, pop along to Café Deux Magots, where you’ll be following in the famous footsteps of artists such as Picasso and writers like Oscar Wilde.
The next day is all yours to shop till you drop into a pavement café for an aperitif. Paris has the chicest and most exclusive names in the world of haute couture. Head for areas like Louvres-Tuileries and the Faubourg Saint-Honore, for big names like Versace, YSL and Hermes.
The department stores of Boulevard Haussmann are worth a look too. For antique markets and eclectic shops, it must be Le Marais. The flea markets of St Ousen will always reveal something out of the ordinary.
Sunday is for art at the Louvre or a quick trip up the Eiffel Tower (go early to avoid the crowds). Then, off to the airport, via duty-free, of course.
Dubai is another short break that can satisfy even the most ardent shopaholic. There’s no sales tax and it has a mall that claims to be the largest in the world.
Time your visit with the Dubai Shopping Festival from 3rd January to 3rd February 2019 and you can pick up famous brands with money-off jewellery, fashion, cars and electronics, amongst other items.
Fly into Dubai International Airport and your airport transfer will whisk you to a hotel like the Centro or Ibis.
Before you leave Dubai, maybe take in the nearby race course, home of some of the richest horse racing stakes in the world. By contrast, take a sunset dhow cruise that will remind you of this vibrant city’s more slow-paced times.
