Hawaii - Airport Guide
Honolulu International Airport is the primary entry point for international visitors to Hawaii. Located on Oahu Island, it handles around 20 million passengers a year. The aviation facilities at the airport include two aquatic runways for seaplanes.
Although the Honolulu International Airport is small by mainland standards, it is spread over a large area, and walking between terminals can be tiring and time consuming. Fortunately the airport offers a free shuttle between the various terminals. It departs several times an hour.
Facilities
Honolulu International Airport is equipped with a variety of conveniences and essential services.
These include:
- - 24 hour on-site medical services.
- - A business centre with conferencing facilities.
- - A wide selection of both fast-food and sit-down restaurants.
- - Duty free shopping, bookstores and brand-name boutiques.
- - Currency exchange and banking facilities.
Getting to and from the airport
There are several ways to travel to and from Honolulu International Airport:
Bus
Two bus routes operate out of Honolulu International Airport, from the second level of the departure terminals. Using the bus service, you can travel to downtown Honolulu and on to Waikiki. This is the cheapest option for getting from the airport to the city.
Taxis and shuttles
The Airport Waikiki Express is the easiest way to get in and out of the airport, and provides shuttle services to numerous hotels twice an hour.
Taxis are located outside the first level baggage claim area at the Overseas Terminal, next to the airport post office. Fares are more expensive than those for the shuttle or bus, but drivers will drop you right at your hotel.
Car hire
Six car rental companies operate fleets from Honolulu International Airport. They operate counters in the baggage claim area, and the rental offices are on the ground level opposite Baggage Claim G. You can take an airport shuttle from outside the baggage claims area to the rental offices if required.
Car rental agencies at the airport include:
- - Advantage
- - Avis
- - Budget
- - Enterprise
- - Hertz
- - National
