Where is hot in October?
ot, sunny destination. Here are some of our top picks.
October is a great time to visit Mauritius. It’s the start of summer, with temperatures averaging between 20ºC and 26ºC on the coast, and it’s also just before the cyclone season kicks in.
Although the beaches might be the main draw, Mauritius offers plenty of other things to keep you occupied, from water sports and hiking, to visiting the old colonial tea plantations and horse riding. There’s also fantastic big game fishing opportunities throughout October. For some quality sunbathing time, head to Île aux Cerfs for its powdery, white sand and crystal-clear water; it’s also popular for water sports, but avoid the weekends, which tend to bring crowds.
Not just a stopover destination, Singapore is one of the world’s sleekest cities. The weather is consistently hot, with average temperatures of 27ºC to 32ºC throughout the year; but travelling in October means avoiding the school holidays and taking advantage of low season prices and availability.
Singapore is known for the shopping paradise of Orchard Road, but there’s much more to do in this city state. Make sure you check out the zoo, one of the world’s best. The botanical gardens are the perfect escape from the bustle of the city, and when you’re peckish, hit up a hawker food market, such as Maxwell Road, for Singapore’s famous Hainanese chicken rice.
Abu Dhabi is still very hot in October (around 30ºC or so), but considerably cooler than the blistering summers. It’s also just prior to peak season, so there are still great value deals to snap up.
Take advantage of that sunshine by hanging out around the water. Watch the old wooden boats sail out to sea at Dhow Harbour, stroll around the corniche, and tuck into some delicious seafood at Finz, located in the Beach Rotana, on one of their terraces by the water. For a spot of culture, head to the colossal, white and gold Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the world’s eighth largest.
The scorching temperatures of Las Vegas have lessened slightly by October, but the desert city is still a hot destination, with highs averaging around 28ºC. With the pool party season at its tail end, it’s also less busy, so it’s great for those who want to avoid the crazy, sweaty summers.
Spend your tanning/drinking time at the Marquee day club in the Cosmopolitan, and make sure you keep a day free for a trip to the Grand Canyon. The grand Bellagio and its fountains are a Vegas must-see and if you’re going to see a show, make it the fabulous Cirque du Soleil.
With average October temperatures of 21ºC, low rainfall and eight hours of sunshine a day, Cyprus has a long summer. As it’s quieter at this time of year, it makes a particularly good destination for families during the half-term holidays.
Coral Bay, not far from Paphos, is a fun, family-friendly beach destination, with shallow water and lots to do aside from catching rays, such as parasailing and diving. Fig Tree Bay in Protaras is stunning with soft, golden sand and azure water. There’s plenty of history in Cyprus, too; check out the late Roman Paphos mosaics and spend some time exploring the incredible ancient Kourion.
