It's a sprawling city, with no obvious core, so plan your trip ahead of time - and work out which slice of LA you want to call home. Downtown, Hollywood, Westside and Wilshire's museums, restaurants and malls all make for excellent bases, and are where you'll find the best selection of accommodation. And, of course, Venice Beach, with its colourful boardwalk and network of canals, is hard to beat.
