booking advice, visa information and airports and airlines tips

When is the best time to book cheap flights to Amsterdam?

To get cheap flights to Amsterdam, you should book at least three months in advance. But, if you want a last-minute bargain, keep an eye out for late deals in January and February. If your travel dates are flexible, try searching by month to find the cheapest flights to Amsterdam.

When is the cheapest time to visit Amsterdam?

Flights to Amsterdam are usually cheapest in January, although November and February are also cheap months to fly. The Netherlands’ famous tulip season runs from mid-March to mid-May, so flights to Amsterdam are more expensive at this time of year. Flight prices peak in August, particularly around the time of Amsterdam Gay Pride – the city-wide festival takes place every year on the first weekend of August.

When is Amsterdam weather best?

Amsterdam is typically quite cool, even in summer. July and August are the hottest months, when temperatures hover around 22°C. April is usually the driest month, while October to November is the wettest time of year. Amsterdam is coldest in January – but, on the plus side, there are fewer crowds, shorter queues and discounted flights. So, if you’re willing to wrap up warm, January is a great time to visit Amsterdam.

Which airlines fly to Amsterdam?

A range of airlines offer flights to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), including budget-friendly carriers like easyJet and Flybe – but you could also find a good deal with Air France, British Airways, KLM or Vueling. You can fly direct to Amsterdam from several UK airports, including Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, London Gatwick and London Luton. Try comparing your options from different UK airports to find the cheapest flights to Amsterdam.

How long is the flight to Amsterdam?

Flight times vary depending on where you fly from. A direct flight from London to Amsterdam takes just under an hour, while a direct flight from Glasgow takes around 90 minutes.

How many airports does Amsterdam have?

Schiphol Airport is Amsterdam’s only airport. It’s the third-biggest in Europe, after London Heathrow and Charles de Gaulle in Paris. Despite its size, the airport is very easy to navigate, and getting into the city is very straightforward.

How do I get from Schiphol Airport into Amsterdam?

Schiphol Airport is just nine kilometres outside the city, so getting into Amsterdam is a breeze. If you make your way from the arrivals hall to Schiphol Plaza, you’ll find trains, buses, taxis and car hire desks – so you have plenty of options.

The train station is located directly underneath the airport, and the train journey into central Amsterdam takes around 15 minutes. If you want to travel by train, you’ll need to buy a ticket from the yellow self-service machines – you can either buy a single ticket or a multi-use OV-chipkaart. Similar to a London Oyster card, the OV-chipkaart can be used on the city’s trains, trams, buses and metro.

Alternatively, you could take the bus. The bus terminal is located right outside Schiphol Plaza, where the Airport Express – or line 197 – will whisk you into Amsterdam city centre. The buses run every 15 minutes.

Schiphol Airport also provides a shuttle service which will take you straight to your hotel – ideal if you have a lot of luggage.

What are the top things to do in Amsterdam?

Amsterdam is a vibrant city that thrums with life, and there are lots of things to do. In fact, Amsterdam doesn’t really have an off-season – from its museums to nightclubs, there’s always something going on. Spend a morning cruising along the canals on a boat tour, taking photos of Amsterdam’s unique houses and picturesque bridges. See incredible artwork at the Van Gogh museum, make a pilgrimage to the poignant Anne Frank House, and marvel at European masterpieces in the Rijksmuseum.

There are several excellent day trips available from Amsterdam, too. You could spend some time admiring the windmills of Zaanse Schans or, if you’re visiting the Netherlands during tulip season, hire bikes and enjoy a leisurely cycle along the flower strip, Bollenstreek. It’s best to go in mid-April, when this 20-mile stretch is bursting with colourful tulips.

Do I need a visa to fly to Amsterdam?

British passport holders don’t need a visa to travel to any country in the EU – you can stay for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. You just need to make sure that your passport has at least six months validity left, on the day you travel. However, you should make sure that your passport is in good condition before you fly, as Dutch officials have been known to impound damaged passports. If you’re planning to stay in the Netherlands for longer than 90 days, you will need a visa.
