Regional Departures 2019

No-one likes going on a long, tiring journey just to get to your departure airport. Or to fork out for it either. Well, the good news is that regional airports across the UK have upped their game and can offer an increased range of destinations for your next holiday. Of course, not all of these routes will take you direct to your holiday spot, but they do make things a lot simpler.

If you are in Scotland, for example, you can fly from Glasgow to Las Vegas with American Airlines with two connections in the US. Add a hotel like the Circus Circus Hotel and you’re sorted with somewhere to stay on the Strip that’s great value. For a bit more pizzazz, try the Luxor, noticeable for its 30-storey pyramid!

Across at Edinburgh Airport, cheap holiday flights to family favourite sun-drenched Orlando go via one stop in New York with United Airlines. Edinburgh also has plenty of direct (and often cheap) flights to Europe, with everything from Bergen in the north, down to Tenerife, and eastwards to Turkey.

If it’s Orlando you want, try a good value hotel like the Maingate Lakeside Resort, with free transport to the Disney and Universal parks.

Manchester your nearest airport? Considering Dubai for a holiday? Well, KLM will get you there, with one stop in Amsterdam. When you arrive, the Golden Sands Apartments are a cost-effective alternative to a deluxe hotel, a real ‘home away from home’. Well-placed in the heart of the action, and good for all sizes of party. Incidentally, flights from Manchester will also get you to far-flung places like Barbados, Mexico, Israel, Pakistan, and pretty much all over Europe.

Birmingham locals can get their cheap holiday kicks direct to New York thanks to flights from United Airlines. Canny travellers stay in the hotels close to the airports to save their money for spending their money in the annual New York sales. Or, if the lure of a great department store like the legendary Macy’s is just too much, try the Hotel Pennsylvania in the heart of midtown. It’s directly across from the famous Madison Square Gardens, and just a block from Macy’s.

If you want your cheap holiday to leave from Newcastle Airport, somewhere exotic like Bangkok is a straightforward flight with Emirates. You’ll connect once, in Dubai. A good bet for a hotel over there that’s at the heart of all things, is the hip Le Fenix. It’s got an indoor pool with floor to ceiling windows that are great for watching the teeming life of the city go on below.

In the north of Scotland, those travelling from Aberdeen can get to Miami from their local airport, with one stop in London. American Airlines does the same via London and JFK Airport in New York. Once you touch down in sunny Miami, get close to the beach with a stay at the very characterful Howard Johnson Plaza Dezerland Beach and Spa. Here, you can eat a meal sitting in the backseat of a vintage Chevrolet or a glamorous Thunderbird in the unique restaurant.
