Johannesburg - Further Afield
The administrative centre of South Africa, Pretoria is a handsome, planned city, just 50 km away. Visit the Union Buildings, the location of the South African presidency, with their lovely gardens, the National Cultural History Museum, the well-run Zoo and the small but interesting Groenkloof Nature Reserve. Hatfield, near the University, has a range of excellent bars, clubs and restaurants.
Old Kromdraai Gold Mine
The Kromdraai Gold Mine was one of the first gold mines on the Witwatersrand (the Johannesburg city region) and is beautifully located in a pleasant, semi rural setting, about 40 minutes drive from downtown. You can still pan for gold here, in the streams which trickle out from the mine shafts.
This world-class cluster of attractions is known as the Cradle of Humankind and is an easy hour’s drive away. Maropeng tours leave from the fascinating Visitor Centre and take in the Sterkfontein Caves, world famous for their fossil finds, and retrace 3 million years of human history.
