Getting Around in Ko Samui

Ko Samui is very easy to get around. It takes about an hour to drive around the whole island. Motorbike hire on Ko Samui is a pratical, cheap and fun way to explore the island, but beware of reckless driving.

During the day, red pick-up trucks, or "songthaews", serve as local buses. The destination is marked in English on the front and sides of the songthaew. They have no official stops, but follow fixed routes around the island. Flag down the first one you see, make sure it's going in the direction you're headed, and bang on the roof when you want to get out. Fares should be no more than 60 Baht.

Car hire is an excellent way of getting around Ko Samui, as it allows you to explore the small roads and hidden tracks leading into the jungle or down to one of Ko Samui's private coves and deserted beaches.

Perhaps the most popular - and most risky - way of getting around Ko Samui is to rent a motorbike for between 120-250 baht per day. Remember you are much more vulnerable than other road users if you're on a bike, and motorbikes do not come insured - so take care on the road.
