Abu Dhabi - Getting around

Abu Dhabi isn’t a big place. And it’s been designed with the car in mind - with walking, and therefore footpaths, scarce (that might also have something to do with the fierce summer heat, though, rather than its lack of eco-credentials).

Abu Dhabi’s modern fleet of white-and-gold taxis can be easily flagged in the street. You’ll find fares start from around Dhs. 2.50 (the posher silver cabs a little more) and then you’ll pay around Dh. 1 per 750 metres thereafter. Be aware when you get into a white and gold taxi though, as these tend not to use their meter. Most city centre journeys shouldn’t cost more than Dhs 10. Perhaps a little more after midnight. And tipping isn’t expected, but it’s polite to round up to the nearest Dh.

The main Bus station in Abu Dhabi is on Hazaa Bin Zayed Road. The fare system is simplicity itself, as are the routes, which call at all the major city centre sights and hotels - and are displayed at all bus stops. Expect to pay just Dhs. 1 for a single ride, Dhs. 3 for a day pass, or Dhs. 40 for a one-month Ojra pass.

The big bus

The Big Bus Company operates guided tours (in Arabic, English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Mandarin and Russian) offering a fascinating insight into Abu Dhabi’s history and culture. The tickets are valid for the day, and allow riders to hop-on and hop-off at their leisure at 11 stops throughout the city.
