Wellington - Transport Guide
Wellington as a city is quite compact, which is great for travellers in terms of getting around qiuckly and cost-effectively. The best way to explore the city, is to walk it. Because the city is quite small in size, it means you can walk from one side of the city to the other in around 20 minutes. There is a very good public transport system, which include Buses and cable cars.
Metlink is the city's bus network and can take you anywhere around the city including the suburbs. Make sure you pick up a Snapper Card from the Wellington i-SITE visitor information centre as it's the cheaper and faster way to pay for bus travel.
The Cable CAR leaves from downtown Wellington to the suburbs such as Kelburn. At the top of the Cable Car you will find some great views of Wellington
Wellington has a good fleet of taxis, with ranks situated throughout the CBD. Expect to pay around $2 for a pick up and around $2 for each kilometre thereafter, with fares having a surcharge after midnight and from/to the airport.
