Miami - Getting Around

Miami enjoys a well-thought-out, and progressive public transport infrastructure. Its downtown area is criss-crossed with mono-rail, bus and train services, and, out in the suburbs, Dade County's efficient bus and long-distance train routes offer connections to the main tourist spots along the coast too.

Miami's excellent monorail system, the Metromover, offers free, fast and fuss-free travel throughout the downtown area. Check the digital display above the map in the center of the platform for each car's destination. There's a service every three minutes throughout the day, and more at peak times.

The city's popular rail service, Metrorail, operates 22 stations throughout the city and the suburbs, all about a mile distant from each other. To ride, you'll need an Easy Card (you can get one from vending machines at the stations) - single fares cost $2.

The city's bus service, Metrobus, connects with Metrorail and Metromover, with routes throughout the city, the keys, beaches, port and beyond. The green bus stops display the route numbers, and their destinations. Fares are $2 per trip, and you'll either need the exact cash or an Easy Card.

Licenced taxis (with the words taxi, cab or taxicab, and a telephone number on the car's sides) operate from ranks throughout Miami. The meter should always display the fare. Meter rates are $2.50 for the first 1/6 mile and $0.40 for each additional 1/6 mile. Tips of around 15% are usually expected.
