So where best to kick back and just be indulged? Dubai is a very good bet. Besides extra-luxurious hotels, beaches and all that sun, it’s full of wonderful spas. Amongst the top names, there’s the Talise Spa, set amongst beautiful gardens with just about every treatment imaginable. For a real sense of the spectacular, head for the towering seven-star Burj Al Arab hotel. Their Assawan Spa combines excellent treatments with breath-taking views of the Arabian Gulf. The Aramani Spa does things in the style you’d expect from such an iconic brand and includes rich thermal baths where you’ll bathe in warm mineral waters.
If you want to relax but with a difference, touch down in LA and enjoy what California has to offer. How about a massage on a gondola? That’s what they’re offering on the 33ft gondolas floating off the Coronado Cays near San Diego. Head up the coast from LA towards San Francisco and you’ll find plenty to rejuvenate mind and body. Stay at the famous Ventana Inn in Big Sur if you want to relax like Hollywood stars Steve McQueen and Dennis Hopper have done. Check out the Esalen Institute, famous from the 60’s hippy counter-culture and still offering weird and wacky ways to get in touch with your inner self. Not to mention plenty of nude hot-tubbing!
If you truly want to get away from it all and enjoy what is claimed to be the best view in California, it’s hard to beat staying in an old fire lookout in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest of Northern California – it’s very basic, but very cheap. If you do have the energy, the forest is great for hiking, fishing, kayaking, biking and wildlife watching.
Fly to Bangkok and you won’t be far from wonderful beaches just made for relaxation. In fact, there’s even a place called Relax Bay that sums up Thailand’s pleasures. Just along the Andaman Sea coast near Krabi Town, its beaches are long, sweeping beauties sloping gently into the warm, clear sea. North of Phuket you will find any number of perfect white beaches and the peaceful Khao Lak National Park - perfect for a laidback, do nothing couple of days in the sun. Another island that is tranquil and a perfect way to get away from the world is Koh Tao. Hang out in a hammock on the balcony of a wooden bungalow and listen to the soft lap of the sea.
Australia & New Zealand
A glass or two of wine has always been a good way to de-stress, so how about a visit to a good vineyard? You’ll find plenty of these down-under. For example, the Penfolds Magill Estate on the outskirts of Adelaide, established in 1845. At their restaurant you can eat and drink well and enjoy views of the city. In New Zealand, the Stonyridge vineyard is a short ferry ride from Auckland - very beautiful, with a casual restaurant/café for chilling out with your glass of something vintage.
Luxurious spas, tranquil beaches, getaway islands, vineyards and tropical retreats - there’s a whole world of relaxation out there, and it’s never been easier to enjoy it.
