Mauritius - Airport guide
Mauritius is serviced by a single international airport located in the south-east of the main island - the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. Originally named the Plaisance Airport, it’s the primary entry point for tourists.
The airport is located approximately 48 kilometres south-east of the capital, Port Louis, and is near various hotels on the south and south-east coast of Mauritius. It takes about an hour by road to travel from the airport to the Mauritian north coast.
In the last several years, the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport has undergone a series of upgrades, including the addition of a new passenger terminal. These upgrades are intended to transform the airport into a regional transportation hub.
The facilities at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport remain modest in comparison to those of some major international airports. However, it’s equipped with sufficient facilities to ensure the comfort of travellers. Among these are a food court, shops and two VIP lounges. The airport is easy to get around, and commuters aren’t required to take additional transport to travel between terminals.
In recent years, the airport’s infrastructure has also been upgraded to reduce its ecological footprint. This project has included the introduction of solar energy, rainwater recovery and improved insulation to reduce energy costs.
Getting to and from the airport
The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is located about 45 minutes by road from the capital city of Port Louis. At present, no official shuttle service operates between the airport and the capital. However, taxis and hotel shuttles are readily available.

Many hotels offer guests a shuttle service. Often these hotels contract a taxi driver or tour bus operator to perform collections and drop-offs at the airport. It’s a good idea to confirm whether your hotel offers a free shuttle service before departing for Mauritius.
