Kenya - Getting Around

Getting around Kenya is relatively simple as the country has reasonably good transport links and networks. When you are on holiday in Kenya choose between bus, taxi, train or car to get around.

Bus

Within the main cities of Mombassa and Nairobi tourists will find an adequate bus service operating scheduled routes throughout the city and suburban areas. Travellers can board a bus at any bus stop and buy a ticket onboard. Travelling by bus is one of the cheapest ways to get around Kenya, but does come with some risk of over crowding. One of the main bus operators to look for is Akamba, who operate an extensive number of services. If you are looking to travel further afield, many bus companies operate cross-country services, connecting most cities and towns in Kenya.

Driving in Kenya

For flexibility and ease why not hire a car in Kenya. Car hire in Kenya is simple and cheap when you book it through netflights.com before you travel. All you need is both parts of your national driving license. Unlike the UK, Kenyan drivers drive on the left and kilometers are used on road signs. Speed limits are set at 110 kph on open roads and 50kph on urban streets. For safety reasons, we do not recommend night time driving as road accidents and crime is more common.

Taxis

Taxis are a safe and convenient way to get round Kenya. Tourists are strongly advised to only use the licensed taxis and set a fare before you travel. The Kenatco Taxis are state controlled taxis and charge per kilometre at a fixed rate.

Train

The main train lines run between Nairobi and Mombassa. Leaving on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7pm the Mombassa-bound train leaves Nairobi, travels over night and arrives between 8am and 10am the following morning. The Mombassa to Nairobi over night train also leaves at 7pm but on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
