Thailand airport guide

Thailand includes six international airports, but most visitors arrive via either Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport (IATA code BKK) or, for those hoping to head straight to the beach, Phuket International Airport (IATA code HKT).

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport

Opened in 2006, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport, or New Bangkok International Airport, is the busiest airport in Thailand and one of the busiest in the world. It handles upwards of 50 million passengers a year. The name “Suvarnabhumi” refers to the legendary golden kingdom, thought to lie in Southeast Asia.

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International facilities

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International consists of one terminal with seven concourses, A to G. It’s single- building terminal is the fourth largest in the world, spanning 563,000 square metres.

Bangkok’s new international airport boasts a huge range of shops (with duty-free shops centred especially in concourse F), restaurants, coffee shops and fast food outlets.

It also includes children’s’ play areas, which are near the passenger transfer lounges, as well as a sauna and spa, and the airport connects via a walkway to the 612-room Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel.

Additional facilities at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International include:

- A total of 10 information counters, located throughout the terminal.
- Easy access to currency exchange counters and plenty of ATMs.
- Six VIP lounges - one in Concourse A, one in Concourse C, one in Concourse F and three in Concourse G.
- A post office.
- Smoking rooms, located in Concourses C, E and F.
- A multi-faith prayer room.
- A lost and found centre.
- Internet access, which is free of charge for the first 2 hours.

Getting to and from Suvarnabhumi International Airport

The airport is located about 25 kilometres east of downtown Bangkok. The Airport Express Line, opened in 2010, provides a direct rail link from the airport to downtown Bangkok. Taxis and public buses are also widely available.

Car rental is available at the airport, and both short and long-term parking are available at a fee.

Phuket International Airport

Phuket International Airport is located 32 kilometres from downtown Phuket, in southern Thailand. It handles millions of visitors a year, many heading for the island’s famous beaches and resorts.

Phuket International Airport facilities

Phuket International includes separate international and domestic terminals, as well as a terminal reserved for charter flights.

The airport includes a good range of shops, including a pharmacy and a bookstore, and several restaurants, cafés and fast food outlets.

Other airport facilities include:

- An information counter, which you can call on (076) 327230-7.
- Four currency exchange counters in the arrival hall and one in the departure hall, along with a number of ATMs throughout the terminal.
- Two VIP lounges.
- A post office.
- A lost and found centre.
- Internet access, free of charge for the first 2 hours.

Getting to and from Phuket International Airport

A limousine service operates from Phuket International Airport, and taxis are readily available from a clearly marked taxi stand just outside the terminal building. You may have to ask that taxi drivers turn on their metres.

Many hotels and resorts provide shuttles for their guests.

In addition, an inexpensive, air-conditioned public bus completes the route from the airport to Phuket Town once an hour.

Car rental agencies operating from the airport include Avis, Alamo, National and Hertz. For the best rate on car hire in Thailand make sure you book with us before you travel. Check out our low rates on car hire in Thailand

A parking area at the airport has bays for just under 450 vehicles.
