Some ABTA members offer additional financial protection for non-ATOL products. ABTA members are governed by ABTA’s Code of Conduct, under which you will receive high service standards before, during and after booking your holiday.

Visit Sri Lanka

Look at weather charts for your ideal visiting time, but keep an eye on the Yala monsoon season from May to August, which hits the south and west coasts. Alongside the Maha monsoon season that affects the east and north between October and January.

Despite its small size, the island boasts no fewer than eight World Heritage sites. The ancient cities of the northern plains’ Cultural Triangle are a testament to both the country’s history and secrets well kept.

Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka’s capital until the 10th century, and one of the great cities of the medieval world. Polonnaruwa grew to become an important city and thrived before being attacked by Indian invaders and overtaken by the jungle. Visit the beautiful mountain peak of Mihintale, the spot where Sri Lankans believe Buddhism was introduced to the country.

Finally, be sure to go to Sigiriya, or Lion’s Rock, an incredible 200m high column of rock that plays home to an ancient palace. Climb the Rock for stunning views from the top, and gaze back down on what was once the bustling capital of the country.

For a little more by way of adventure trek the nine mile round trip to Sri Pada, or Sacred Footprint, where you’ll find the Buddhist temple atop Adam’s Peak. Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus have all laid claim to the footprint, but in any case it’s a spectacular spot for sunrise.
