Getting around the airport

Bandaranaike Colombo International Airport has 3 terminals, one of which is due to open in 2019. Terminal 1 is used for all international flights, whereas terminal 3 handles domestic flights. The airport is equipped with a selection of facilities, such as gift shops, restaurants, banking services and much more.

Getting to the city from the airport

Once at Bandaranaike Colombo International Airport you can get an airport shuttle to the main bus terminal. Bus 187 costs around LKR 40 and leaves every 30 minutes, going to Central Colombo (Colombo Fort Station). The airport bus depot is about 10 minutes’ walk from the terminal buildings, or one free shuttle ride away.

Train: There is a train station located about 1km from the airport, offering cheap services to central Colombo and departing every hour or so.

Taxi: An official taxi service of more than 600 vehicles is provided by Colombo Bandaranaike Airport. You can reserve a taxi at the counter located in the international arrivals hall. Expect to pay about LKR 1,490 for the 45-minute trip to Colombo’s city centre. You can also take a taxi all the way to Kandy (approx. LKR 4,500), if that’s where you need to go.

Tuk-tuk: these three-wheel vehicles are a fun way to get around the city. Pick one that's metered and expect to pay around LKR 200 for 4-5kms and LKR 250 for 6km.

Don't forget before your flight

Before you leave, you will need to arrange a visa to enter Sri Lanka. You can get a short stay visa online from the Electronic Travel Authority (eTA). Tourist visas are normally issued for a maximum period of 30 days. It’s still possible to get a tourist visa on arrival but it’s better to get one before you travel to avoid waiting. For the most up-to-date advice on visas check with the Sri Lankan High Commission in the UK. Make sure your passport is valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry to Sri Lanka.
