Flying to Tokyo Narita NRT

Situated 37 miles east of Tokyo, Narita flights serve the capital and also the neighbouring town Shibayama and surrounding areas. British Airways and Japan Airways are the only airlines with direct flights from the UK to Japan. Numerous other airlines including Emirates, Swiss, KLM and Air France offer itineraries with a layover from many non-London airports. This includes smaller hubs such as Leeds Bradford Airport from where you can book last minute flights.

On arrival and getting around NRT

Flights to Tokyo Narita will arrive one of the airport's three terminals. However, Terminal 3 is exclusively used by budget airlines and you are unlikely to travel with them from the UK. Since the termination of the terminal transfer train, internal airport travel can now only be made by bus. Those arriving on cheap flights to Narita Airport who wish to continue their onward journey by train will need to take the shuttle to one of the two train stations.

Getting to the city from the airport

The train is the fastest, cheapest and most comfortable way of reaching Tokyo after you have disembarked direct flights to Japan. Two stations serve the airport; one station serves Terminal 1 and another for Terminals 2 and 3. JR and Keisei trains both operate direct routes and those which make several intermediate stops before reaching Tokyo. The Narita Express and the Skyliner are the two quickest options. Taxis are available but are not recommended due to the often heavy traffic.

Don't forget before you fly

Passengers travelling to Japan on return flights can enter visa-free for a period of 90 days. It is not prohibited to enter Japan with a one-way ticket, but the immigration official may ask you about your intentions and onward travel plans. Japanese yen is the local currency.
