What you need to know before flying to Morocco

in a nutshell

From desert vistas to bustling metropolises

Whether you’re using your cheap flights to Morocco to jet off to Marrakesh for a quick city break or to Casablanca for some seaside fun, there is so much to see and do. Its culture is brimming with a range of different influences – Arab, Islamic, Jewish, Spanish, French and Berber to name but a few – that combine to create something rich, vibrant and undoubtedly unique. While exploring Moroccan cities, you’ll find beautiful mosques with towering, intricately detailed minarets that broadcast the call to prayer five times a day, bustling souks selling aromatic spices, medieval medinas and old Kasbah fortresses, where you can get a real sense of Moroccan history.

Time for tea

When you become foot weary, drop into a café for some “Berber Whiskey”, a moreish blend of green tea, mint and sugar that’s become the country’s national drink. Or, if the first pangs of hunger have set in, sit down to some couscous or a rich tagine filled with chicken, chickpeas and apricots. For a truly unforgettable experience, traverse the Atlas Mountains in the southeast corner of the country where the great Sahara begins to encroach upon the land and take a sunset camel ride to take your tea under the stars.

Class is in session

Walk in the footsteps of scholars from days gone by at the Ali Ben Youssef Medersa in Marrakesh or Kairaouine Mosque and University’s library in Fez. As you marvel at the zellij walls and stucco archways, you can learn how the Middle East was once at the forefront of knowledge and academia.

When to go

July and August mark Morocco’s high summer with inland temperatures often soaring past 40 degrees Celsius, making afternoon sightseeing in places like Fez and Marrakesh difficult. Despite these sweat-inducing temperatures, the cost of return flights often increases.

The shoulder seasons in April/May and September/October are the most popular times of year to visit Morocco. Temperatures are warm but not uncomfortable: low to mid 20s in the spring and mid to high 20s in August. The weather is sunny and dry, optimal for sightseeing and hiking. Springtime sees the cheapest airfares, particularly with a departure date early in the week.

As a predominantly Muslim country, Morocco observes the holy month of Ramadan each year. Since the Islamic calendar is lunar-based, the festival’s dates vary. Until 2022, it falls between April and May with Eid Al-Adha falling between July and August. While services will be impacted during daylight hours, after-dark festivities are sure to make up for it when locals flock together to break their fast.

The Red City of Marrakesh and the famed Casablanca are two of the most popular Moroccan destinations with flights leaving from most major United Kingdom airports throughout the year. You’ll be spoilt for choice with carriers, such as Royal Air Maroc, British Airways, Alitalia and Air France.

Some routes include stopovers in European cities like Lisbon, Madrid or Rome, but Morocco flights departing from London often have direct routes available. Although a stopover can bring costs down quite considerably, it can also double your travel time. So, weigh these options carefully before making your decision.
