What you need to know before flying to Egypt

in a nutshell

One of the world’s greatest legacies

From the magnificent Pyramids of Giza to the iconic Great Sphinx and breath-taking Karnak Temple, the monuments left by the ancient Egyptians are endlessly captivating. But that’s not all. Egypt presents travellers with layers upon layers of ancient history and intrigue. Find crumbling Roman trading posts deep in the desert, or visit Tutankhamun’s tomb. The museums of Cairo not only detail Egypt’s long and complicated past, but they are also jam-packed with beautiful artefacts you don’t want to miss.

Beautiful beaches …

Egypt isn’t just for history buffs, though. It’s also a natural paradise. Think palm trees and golden beaches with wooden huts made for two (or just for you). The coast along the Red Sea is packed with coral reefs and colourful, aquatic life. For a prime diving destination, look no further than Ras Muhammad National Park. Try your hand at water sports if you dare or just relax at one of the many gorgeous resorts for some serious sun and sea worship.

From the seashore to the Sahara

Once you’ve seen the ancient wonders and whiled away some time on an exotic beach, there are two other Egypt experiences worth your time. The mighty Nile is the lifeblood of the country. Once revered as sacred, it still impresses visitors to this day. Finally, don’t miss the chance to trek through endless, undulating sand dunes on a camel. With cheap flights to Egypt, you can find out for yourself why this is a must-see vacation destination.

When to go

The Egyptian winter runs from November to February. This is considered the best time to visit as temperatures are often at their lowest. In Cairo and the Nile Delta region, winter evenings are cool; make sure to bring long-sleeved shirts and trousers to stay comfortable. Peak tourist season covers December and January; popular historic sites will be crowded, and prices may rise significantly.

October through April offer mild conditions with temperatures between 25 and 35 degrees Celsius. You may find good deals on flights and hotels during the spring and autumn shoulder-seasons. March, April and September have enjoyable daytime weather and are the perfect months for swimming and snorkelling in the Red Sea.

The summers can get very hot, especially in the south near Luxor and Aswan. From June to September, Cairo is at its most sweltering. Many Egyptians vacate the city and head to the coast in the summer if they can. Come prepared for the weather, and don’t try to do too much too quickly when travelling during the summer. Christmas, Easter and New Year’s generate higher prices due to their popularity with tourists. If you’d like to visit during a popular holiday, book your flights well in advance to save a little money.

Airports and airlines

Benefit from a huge pool of special deals from hundreds of airlines when you book with Netflights. Have flexible travel dates? Leave the date field empty to find the biggest and best bargains. If you’re flexible with your destination airport, leave that blank, too. Our powerful and easy to use search engine will help you to find the ideal Egypt flights for your next holiday.

Although Cairo is the most popular airport to fly into, flights are also available to Alexandria, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh. During peak travel season, direct flights can be found from most London airports as well as Birmingham International, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow and more.

The most popular airlines offering return flights from the United Kingdom to Egypt include Turkish Airlines, Emirates and EgyptAir. Indirect flights are offered by Aegean Air, Austrian Airlines, Etihad Airways and more with a stopover or two in Europe or Turkey likely. If you can, travel during the week for the best price and book your journey two months prior to departure to save money.
