When is the cheapest time to fly to Australia?

The cheapest time to fly to Australia is during the autumn from February to April or May to early June. When booking flights, it is important to keep in mind that Australia’s seasons are the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere. Prices tend to be highest around holidays, such as Christmas, or during the peak tourist season in July and August. Flights departing midweek often are priced lower than flights on the weekend.

When is the best time to book your flight to Australia?

The best time to book your flight to Australia is as early as possible. You can book up to a year ahead of time for peak travel times. January is a particularly good time of the year to look for sales, since it is just after the holidays, and there may sometimes be good last-minute bargains. Airlines like British Airways provide email announcements for sales and cheap tickets to Australia.

Which airlines fly to Australia?

A number of well-known international airlines offer flights from the United Kingdom (U.K.) to Australia. Air New Zealand, Qantas Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, British Airways, Delta Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways and Singapore Airlines are among the most popular choices. As mentioned previously, all U.K. flights to Australia are indirect; there will at least be one stop on the flights to and from Australia. Some routes will be serviced by the same airline for the entire trip, while other flight plans will require passengers to switch between two or more airlines.

What are the main airports in Australia?

As a popular holiday destination, Australia has many flights arriving and departing each day. To accommodate travellers, the country has four main international airports in four of its most popular city destinations: Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in the east and Perth in the west.

 Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport

Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport lies less than 10 kilometres outside the city centre. Not only is it the busiest airport in the country, but it is also the oldest continuously operated commercial airport in the world. Flights to Sydney from the U.K. are operated by several major airlines, such as Virgin Australia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand and Qantas Airways. Because Sydney is a popular destination, it is possible to find flights to this city from any major metropolitan area in the U.K.  However, flights from London will provide the most options for direct flights, while leaving from Edinburgh will likely require two or more layovers.

Melbourne Airport

The second-busiest airport in Australia, Melbourne Airport, is approximately 20 kilometres from the city centre. With three terminals, Melbourne Airport serves as a major hub for both Qantas Airways and Virgin Australia Airlines. London, Edinburgh and other major cities in the U.K. fly into Melbourne frequently with most single-stop flights to Melbourne departing from London and Manchester. Edinburgh and Glasgow mainly provide two-stop flights.

Brisbane Airport

Located 16 kilometres from the middle of the city, Brisbane Airport is Australia’s third-busiest airport. Emirates, Qantas Airways and Singapore Airlines are among some of the more popular airlines that service Brisbane. Once again, all major U.K. cities provide flights to Brisbane. Most single-stop flights depart from London, while most two-stop flights travel from Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Perth Airport

Perth Airport is the only international airport located in the western part of Australia. This airport is situated about 18 kilometres away from the city centre. Qantas Airways and Virgin Australia Airlines offer international flights to Perth. London, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh all have flights to Perth. Many direct flights to Perth depart from London and Manchester; Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh all provide indirect flights to Perth.

How long does it take to get to Australia?

Flights from the U.K. to Australia can take at least 19 hours or longer, depending on the departure and arrival cities. Layovers can also extend travel time significantly. The shortest flight from London Heathrow Airport to Sydney Airport is around 22 hours. Flying from Edinburgh Airport to Sydney Airport, on the other hand, can take up to 24 hours or longer. The quickest flight to Australia leaves from London Heathrow Airport and arrives in Perth with a total flying time of approximately 19 hours and 30 minutes.

How do you book a stopover flight?

To book a stopover flight, first decide where to stop while en route to Australia. This will largely depend on the flights available for the journey, as some routes will not allow stopovers. Additionally, stopovers can only be booked by contacting Netflights’s Sales Division at 0844 692 6792.

How many flights are there per day from the U.K. to Australia?

There are several flights to Australia that depart from the U.K. daily. The time of departure can vary significantly.

Getting around the airports

Flights arriving in Australia disembark in the airport’s international terminal. The international terminals for both Sydney Airport and Perth Airport are located in Terminal 1. For the airports in Melbourne and Brisbane, the international terminals can be found in Terminal 2. All four facilities have both domestic and international terminals, although Perth and Brisbane have different buildings for the two types of flights. All airports provide basic amenities for travellers, such as public toilets, restaurants, money exchange services and business services. Several transportation options are also available for each airport.

Getting to the cities from airports

All four Australian airports provide several transportation options, such as taxis, car hires, or public transportation services, for reaching the city and your accommodations. The Melbourne Airport also provides a 24-hour bus service called SkyBus, which departs from the airport every 10 minutes. For Sydney Airport and Brisbane Airport, the train departs every 10 to 15 minutes.

Not to forget before your flight

It is crucial that U.K. citizens obtain a valid visa before travelling to Australia and that the passport used to travel is valid for the entire duration of the trip. There are two types of visas available: (1) the eVisitor Visa and (2) the Electronic Travel Authority (E.T.A.). The eVisitor Visa can be obtained from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. The E.T.A., on the other hand, can be obtained from a travel agent or an airline for A$20 (approximately £12). A different visa is required for stays longer than three months or for those looking to work or study in Australia. Upon arrival, you may be asked to show evidence of funds and return tickets.
